History

Adidas Virginia Box

The Adidas Jellyfish was probably the biggest sneaker of 2025. That chunky sneaker, designed by Pharrell Williams and co-branded with Virginia, was one of the few shoes that consistently sold out as new releases came out.

The follow up to that sneaker, the Adidas Flat Earther, decided to go in an entirely different direction. Pharrell decided to remove nearly everything, going from one of the chunkiest sneakers to one of the most minimal.

However, while the Jellyfish was selling out and seeing 6+ hour long lines to buy, the Flat Earther is available for well under retail on places like StockX. Does this lack of hype translate to a bad shoe? Let’s dive in and find out.

Looks

Upper

Adidas Flat Earther

At its core, the Adidas Flat Earther is designed to be a minimalist sneaker, and that is as true on the upper as it is anywhere else. The upper is primarily made of just two leather panels. The largest of these two – which starts at your heel, wraps around the interior of the sneaker, then up and over your foot – features nearly all of the shoe’s decorative features.

Not that there are many of them – this pair features three large green stripes and a bit of perforation on the toe. Beyond that there are two Adidas sport logos sewn in, one on the stretching tongue and another on the heel.

Unfortunately, the stitching on this pair is pretty sloppy. From loose threads to inconsistent sizing, this is not what you would expect from a large brand like Adidas. Thankfully, the laid back vibe of the sneaker means this doesn’t harm the overall feel.

Finishing off the upper, the sneaker is half lined with leather on the interior, and features a cream insole.

Mid- and Outsole

Adidas Flat Earther Outsole

The bottom half of the Adidas Flat Earther is equally minimalist. Made entirely of a single piece of rubber, the outsole is cream with dark green inlays placed in an organic design. Virginia branding can be found under the ball and heel of your foot, and an Adidas logo in the middle.

With no midsole, there really isn’t much more to share!

Summary

Back of the Adidas Flat Earther

The Adidas Flat Earther is one of those shoes that at first glance doesn’t have much going for it. The upper is plain, and a significant part of the design actually looks pretty poorly put together.

However, much like the Easy Moc, it’s really hard to dislike this shoe. Trying it on with outfits, these things are achingly cool. There is a casual nonchalance about them that manages to elevate nearly every casual outfit I pair them with. Hoodie and loose sweats? Jeans and a t shirt? Athleisure? All of them look outstanding.

Really the only place these don’t work is with preppier fits.

Fit & Comfort

Fit

Size tag, Made in China / 13

The Adidas Flat Earther fits ever so slightly snug, however given the total lack of structure and soft leather upper, I’d suggest going true to size. If you’re between sizes, I would actually suggest going down. Since these are basically slip ons, if they are loose, you’ll step right out of them as you walk.

Comfort

If you want to be kind, the Adidas Flat Earther can be described as keeping you grounded. If you wanted to be realistic, the Adidas Flat Earther could also be described as having almost nothing between you and the ground.

There is basically no impact protection at all with these sneakers. Unless you’re used to barefoot shoes or walking shoeless, these are going to do a number on your feet if you plan on walking around all day.

The Flat Earther also has an extremely minimal drop, or difference in height between the heel and ball. There is no “correct” height, but if you’re used to high drop shoes like boots, you might experience some pain as your feet adjust.

Materials & Construction

Materials

One side of the magnetic closure on the Adidas Flat Earther

The upper of the Adidas Flat Earther is made almost exclusively of leather. The leather they chose is fine, if not outstanding. It’s thin, but is able to stand on its own without a heavy coat of plastic. The green stripes on the upper are faux leather. I would have preferred an all leather upper, but the faux leather likely helps keep the dead straight lines on the stripes.

The other side

Hidden within the upper are two magnets that hold the tab on the upper.

Under foot, a closed cell insole is not particularly noticeable, and the sneaker is finished off with a single-piece rubber outsole. The rubber for the outsole is on the softer side, but the trade off in durability is worth it for the extra flexibility and the slight improvement in impact protection.

Construction

The construction of this shoe is cemented. Or, in other words, they sew the upper of the Adidas Flat Earther and then glue it directly to the outsole. This style of construction is not only the most common in sneakers, it’s basically required for this style of shoe.

Cemented construction offers maximum flexibility and weather resistance. As a tradeoff, there is less ability to repair a sneaker.

Pricing

Sewn Adidas Logo

The Adidas Flat Earther comes in at a price of $140 USD, and is still available at time of writing. Resale sites have most sizes for a few dollars less, though once you count shipping and fees, you’re going to be paying around $140.

The closest comparison is probably the Adidas Taekwondo Mei. These are not going to have the nicer materials that the Flat Eather does, though you can regularly find these for around $100. Less if you wait for a sale.

The extra $40 isn’t completely unjustified – the nicer materials and Pharrell connection have value – but if you just want a minimal sneaker from Adidas there are other options out there.

Who is the Adidas Flat Earther For?

The Adidas Flat Earther are great for anyone who is looking for a sneaker that will elevate casual outfits. If you have tried the Samba trend, the Nike Total 90 trend, and found them all to mainstream, I think this will be right up your ally.

If comfort is your top priority – or you only own a couple of shoes – you might want to skip this pair. Living with these as your every day sneaker just isn’t worth it.
