History

It’s impossible to separate the brand Kyrgies from the country Kyrgyzstan.
Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest countries in one of the poorest parts of the world – central Asia. Decades of economic exploitation from the Soviet Union and Russia have resulted in a situation where finding a living wage is difficult at best.
Enter Kyrgies. Kyrgies makes slippers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, at a factory that pays a living wage. Even better, unlike a lot of places, they don’t use harsh chemicals that risk the lives of the workers in that factory.
The success of the brand has resulted in an expansion of the factory, and economic opportunity for its workers.
Of course, that’s all well and good, but what about the slippers themselves?
Today we’re going to take a look at their Outdoor Slipper. We will find out if they are worth your hard earned money. And if the comfort really is everything they claim it to be.
With all of that out of the way, let’s dive in and find out.
Disclaimer: Kyrgies provided this pair for the purpose of review. However, this is not a sponsored post. Kyrgies was not able to review any of the information here before the review went live. Everything said is the true opinion of the pair I received.
Looks
Upper

The upper of the Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper is fairly basic, by design. Basically, the entire slipper is made from a single piece of very thick wool. The owner of Kyrgies has noted that they wanted to create a Scandinavian vibe with these. The brand cut out anything that isn’t needed.
Embellishments, if you can call them that, are limited. A small “Kyrgies” tag on the side, a loop on the back, and some decorative stitching around the opening.
I opted for the Pine Green color, and I think it looks great. The brand told me that the Charcoal is their best-selling color, but I think that’s a bit boring. Come on, you’re wearing out door slippers, have some fun.
One thing I will note, at least when new, the wool is a hair magnet. I don’t let my dog into the office where I take out-of-the-box photographs, but somehow these managed to pick up dog hair going from their packaging to my photography set up.
Outsole

The outsole of the Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper is where they differ from the main-line indoor model. Rather than leather, these come with a natural crepe rubber outsole.
This outsole is wrapped up around the slipper to give a bit more protection against bumps. It’s then stitched on along the entire edge.
Personally, I think the visual texture provided by the crepe outsole suits the thick wool better than the leather on their indoor slipper. Even if I didn’t plan on wearing these outside, I’d strongly consider going for the crepe for the visual differences.
Interestingly, while the upper did pick up hair, the crepe outsoles didn’t.
Summary

The Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper does exactly what it says on the box. They are a skandi-designed slipper that can be worn both inside and outside.
Their simple design makes them surprisingly easy to pull off in an outfit. Pair them with something like the Taylor Stitch Apres pant and similarly interestingly textured shirt and you can have an extremely cozy outfit that wouldn’t look out of place at a coffee shop in the nicest part of town.
Would I go so far as Kyrgies suggests and wear them to the office? Absolutely not. However, if you’re looking for a way to dress comfy while looking like an adult, these are a great pick.
Fit & Comfort
Fit

The Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper should fit fairly tight in order to stay on your feet. The wool – while thick – does have a noticeable amount of give to it.
On the Brannock I’m between a 12E and a 12.5D. I typically take my stitched shoes in a 12 and my sneakers in a 13. I took these in a size “12-12.5” and find that they fit me well. Tight, but not uncomfortably so. If I was between a 12.5D and a 13, I would definitely want to size up to the 13-13.5 size.
If you prefer European sizes, I typically take a 46 in almost everything, with some sneakers (like Adidas) going up to a 47. I ordered these in a size 45. As a reminder, the conversion from EU to US is not consistent across brands. When comparing EU to US sizes be sure to check each brand’s size chart.
For those who do get sizing wrong, the brand does offer exchanges (or returns).
Comfort

The Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper’s comfort will depend on what you’re looking for. Obviously, a minimalist slipper like this isn’t going to offer a ton of under foot padding. The outdoor version, with the soft rubber outsole, will do a better job in this category though. If you do want a bit of squish, even if only for indoor wear, I’d suggest going with this option.
The brand does offer an insole for a bit more padding. It’s priced at a pretty affordable $12, just be sure you order it with your original pair to get free shipping. Also, be sure to adjust your sizing accordingly.
On the other hand, if you want a pair of minimalist slippers, these do a great job. The thick wool feels like you wrapped your feet in a Pendleton blanket. There is a bit of extra wool directly under your heel to provide a bit of padding.
I wouldn’t want to spend a full day on my feet in these, or any other slipper, but for a quick run to the store they should be extremely comfortable.
Materials & Construction

The materials list of the Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper is pretty short.
For the vast majority of the slipper, there is only one material – wool. Kyrgies uses wool from Kyrgyzstan, all of which has been certified by Oeko-Tex to verify the supply chain. This means there is no child or forced labor in the manufacturing.
Even better, the wool comes from sheep that are mulesing-free. I’ll spare you the gory details of what mulesing is on this page, but if you care about animal welfare, this is a good thing.
This wool is felted using nothing but water and soap.
Outside of the wool, the loop on the back is cotton and the Kyrgies tag is polyester.
The outsole is made of crepe rubber. Crepe rubber is made by pouring thin layers of milk of rubber into sheets. These strips are then cut to make things like these outsoles. They don’t tend to be the most durable of outsoles, but offer much better spring/bounce compared to other, denser rubber compounds.
Ease of Care

While these Kyrgies Outdoor Slippers have “outdoor” right in the name, there are a few things you should know. Wool, while good at a lot of things, does not like being soaked. You should avoid wearing these in the rain, or even if there are lots of puddles on the ground.
If they get wet, they will shrink and deform. You might be able to save them by wearing them as they dry. But, even then, they won’t look as nice as when new.
The other thing to be aware of is that there isn’t a great way to resole these. With a factory on the other side of the planet for most of their buyers, it just isn’t economical to replace the outsole. You might be able to get a cobbler to peel and replace the crepe, but it’ll likely cost as much as buying a new pair.
Otherwise, though, care on these should be extremely minimal. No need for shoe trees or material care. Just wear them until the outsole is worn through.
Pricing

The Kyrgies Outdoor Slippers come in at a price of $84. If you prefer the leather-soled option you can save $5, but I would recommend these even for inside wear. This puts them anywhere from $15-50 less than comparable name brand wool slippers like Glerups or Haflinger. In fact, they are more in the range of the no-name brands on Amazon.
Even if you believe brand reputation doesn’t matter in quality, the supply chain certifications Kyrgies carries justifies getting these over similarly priced no-name brands.
Are the Kyrgies Outdoor Slipper Worth It?

The Kyrgies Outdoor Slippers offer a really compelling choice in what I would call the “adult casual” style. When you put an outfit together with these it feels like you’re going down to the lobby at a high-end resort. Even if you’re just going to target for milk.
When it comes to pricing, these are surprisingly affordable – especially given the supply chain commitments the brand has made. Not only are you saving money compared to other name brands, you’re not doing it at the expense of labor standards for those who make them.
If you’re considering getting a pair of wool slippers, I would definitely give Kyrgies a try. From a company background that’s everything you can ask for, and with free returns, it’s a no brainer to take a look.
