History

Amberjack was founded as a way to make dress shoes more comfortable for people on their feet all day. And, in case you’re wondering, they do a really good job of that. However, as the brand has grown, they’ve expanded their models: a Chelsea, a loafer, etc.
However, recently they decided to go all in on the comfort space and have launched not one, but two sneakers. We’ll be looking at the Atlas in a couple of weeks, but today we are going to take a look a the “The Low Top.”
The Low Top is Amberjack’s attempt at a classic leather sneaker. Chunkier, padded, and more comfort-forward than minimalist. In fact, they’ve even gone so far as to replace their famous cushioning system with something new.
Are the changes an improvement? Or a reason to leave these for something else?
Let’s dive in and find out.
Disclaimer: Amberjack provided this pair of shoes for the purpose of review, however this is not a sponsored post. Everything in this review is true to my own opinion.
Looks
Upper

The upper of the Amberjack The Low Top is about as close to a classic white sneaker as you can think of. This pair comes in an all-white full grain leather, though you can also opt for tan, brown, or black. Stitching, also in white, runs along the edge of the quarters, eyelets, and heel cap.
There is definitely a chunkiness to the design. The padding and soft leather combine to push these out of the minimalist sneaker look. The folded edges around the collar and back tab play into this look. A little more Balmain B Court than Margiela GAT.
Inside, the back half of The Low Top is lined with white sheep skin (that feels fantastic), with a synthetic suede lining the rest. Of course, the yellow Amberjack insole is immediately visible as soon as you take them out of the box.
Mid- and Outsole

On the bottom half of the Amberjack Low Top, a quite chunky single-piece EVA midsole outsole combo offers the biggest styling feature of the sneaker. Unlike their other models, this is a more traditional midsole unit, rather than a cup sole.
Around an inch in height at the heel and slightly less at the forefoot, it’s clear that the brand wanted to lean into that chunky vibe with this pair.
The bottom of the outsole is a much more athletic sneaker vibe. Rubber panels embossed with the Amberjack diamond logo feature in 4 panels – three on the front and one wrapping around the heel.
No matter which color upper you opt for, the outsole is going to be white with an ever so slight blueish hue.
Summary

From a style perspective, Amberjack didn’t stray too far from the script. When they were designing this pair it was clear they wanted to offer a clean white sneaker for fans of the brand, and that is exactly what The Low Top offers.
While slightly chunkier than other options in this style, it’s still ridiculously easy to put together outfits since they go with just about everything. Shorts, jeans, chinos. Heck, even a casual suit can work with these.
I certainly wouldn’t worry about putting an outfit together with these. At the same time, you’re probably not going to be turning any heads.
Fit & Comfort
Fit

The Amberjack The Low Top is built on a different last than their other pairs – slightly more generous in fit. The brand recommends going true to size, but if you’re coming from more traditional sneaker brands like Nike or Adidas, I’d definitely suggest going down a half size. For those coming from other Amberjack products, you’ll probably want to stay the same size.
I typically wear a 13 in most sneakers, but ordered these in my dress shoe size of 12. It’s slightly snugger than I would prefer with thicker athletic socks, but a 13 would definitely be too big.
The good news is that if you do mis-size, returns and exchanges are free.
Comfort

The Amberjack The Low Top takes a completely different pathway to comfort than other Amberjack shoes. Where other shoes rely primarily on a memory-foam like midsole to do the majority of the lifting for comfort, these lean on a big thick slab of EVA foam.
EVA and memory foam have a different feel. EVA, used in the vast majority of modern athletic-focused sneakers, is bouncier with a faster return to its original shape. However, the polyurethane based foam in their drop in midsoles, a foam style more common on sneakers from the 1980’s, tends to be softer.
There is still a drop in insole in these, however it’s much thinner than their other shoes by necessity. A thick midsole and a thick drop in midsole combined would be extremely unstable to walk on.
It’s also worth making a mention of the sheepskin lining. It’s fantastic – super soft and smooth. I’d love to see this on more of their products.
Materials & Construction
Materials

The Amberjack The Low Top is made of a relatively short list of higher end materials. The upper is made of a full grain leather, actually slightly thicker than what they make their dressier shoes out of. There is a poly coat on top, but that is pretty common to achieve a stark white upper in a sneaker.
Inside the upper, there is an excellent sheep skin lining around the back of the shoe and is even used for the lasting panel. Near the front of the sneaker, and just at the back of the heel, a synthetic micro suede is used for grip.
Under your foot, an insole made of polyurethane-based foam isn’t quite as thick as some of their other offerings, but is still probably the best insole that come pre-packaged with a sneaker on the market today. This feels more similar to an aftermarket option that you would buy to replace whatever came with a sneaker originally.
As you continue to move down, a large slab of an EVA foam blend makes up the midsole and much of the outsole. This blend is highly rubberized, which should help a lot with long term durability. Finishing off the sneaker, there are 4 rubber panels at high contact points to help keep wear to a minimum.
Construction

The Amberjack The Low Top is made using cemented construction. This style of shoemaking is by far the most common, and is made by sewing the upper together and then gluing it to the midsole using contact cement.
Cemented construction offers great weather resistance and flexibility, but does mean that resoling the sneaker is next to impossible. Once the outsole wears out, the sneaker is done.
Since I have spent so much time on location of construction for the brand in the past, it is worth noting that the construction for this pair was moved to China. Of course, China doesn’t mean worse quality. And this sneaker comes in at a lower price than comparable options they make in Portugal.
Pricing & Value

The Amberjack The Low Top comes in at a price point of $169 – an approximately $30 discount from their other shoes. This is especially notable as it has some of the best materials of any shoe put out by the brand.
Of course, unlike the other shoes from Amberjack that really don’t have any competition for what they are going for, the minimalist design with sneaker might be the most common style of shoe made world-wide. It’s pretty easy to find pairs for $40 and for $400.
In general, The Low Top offers much better materials than the more affordable tier, think the Adidas Stan Smith. Though going up in price to something like Common Projects does offer some finishing improvements.
Wrap Up

The Amberjack The Low Top is clearly designed to be a minimalist white sneaker for people who are fans of the Amberjack brand. There are some tweaks – slightly nicer materials and the choice to use EVA as the main source of comfort – but it’s clear this is built by Amberjack for Amberjack owners.
This is a solid, comfort-first white sneaker. It doesn’t reinvent the category, and it won’t replace higher-end minimalist options if you already own them. But if you like Amberjack’s approach and want that same comfort in a casual sneaker, this delivers exactly that.
